Undergraduate Research/Learning Opportunities

I am offering some research and reading projects for juniors and seniors in the subjects of Fluid Dynamics, Aerodynamics, Dynamics and Engineering Mathematics. This is not formal coursework, it’s not part of your degree requirements and there is no financial support. You want to participate in this primarily for the sake of learning. The projects are organized into two categories: research and reading. The idea is for you to learn about topics not covered by the MAE curriculum. There is, however, long-term potential for a conference or a journal paper, or a Masters thesis topic (if you decide to go to graduate school here), if you feel sufficiently motivated by the topic and are willing to put in some effort.

I’m giving you a tentative list of topics below, but since I’m doing this over my regular workload I won’t be able to participate in more than 3 topics. It is best to form groups.

Research and Learning

These projects will be primarily research-oriented and are theoretical and computational. Specific research tasks will be assigned to you and you will need to report back weekly on progress made.

  1. Dynamics of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs)
  2. Models of nonlinear evolution and interactions of vortices
  3. Dynamics of spinning satellites with nutation ring dampers

Reading and Learning

These projects will be organized mostly like reading courses. I will be less involved in these projects due to my time constraints. I will assign journal papers/book extracts for you to read and understand, sometimes combined with mini-assignments and homework problems. We will have scheduled meetings where you update me on the progress you’ve made. On topics 1 and 2, I might even give you mini-lectures if my schedule permits.

  1. Introduction to panel methods in aerodynamics
  2. Introduction to complex variable methods in fluid dynamics and aerodynamics
  3. Introduction to wind turbines
  4. Road vehicle, rail vehicle aerodynamics
  5. Fluid flows in pipe networks

'Requirements’ (preferred): Passing grade in all of the following courses: Calculus I, II and III, ME 228 (Engineering Analysis I), ENGR 233 (Statics), ENGR 234 (Dynamics), ME 328 (Engineering Analysis II) and either ME 338 (Fluid Mechanics) or AE 339 (Aerodynamics I)
