Title: Aero-Optical Effects of High-Speed Boundary Layers

ABSTRACT: In this talk, I will briefly introduce a physical mechanism of aero-optical distortions and means to measure it. As an example, I will discuss aero-optical effects caused by both transitional and turbulent boundary layers at high speeds. I will demonstrate that measurements of aero-optical distortions can be used as a non-intrusive diagnostic tool to extract important boundary layer parameters.

BIO: Dr. Stanislav Gordeyev is an Associate Professor at the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame. He is an internationally recognized expert in investigating aero-optical distortions caused by compressible turbulent flows around airborne systems. His expertise includes performing experimental investigations of optical aberrations, both in the time-averaged and instantaneous sense, caused by canonical flows like boundary layers, shear layers and wakes over a wide range of speeds, including hypersonic, as well as around complex geometries, like side-mounted turrets at subsonic and transonic speeds. His experimental results and developed models are currently widely used to design laser airborne systems, as well as to validate computational codes to predict optical distortions caused by turbulent flows. He has more than 60 scientific publications in leading journals and is a co-author of a recently-published book "Aero-Optical Effects: Physics, Analysis and Mitigation". He is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of the American Physical Society and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).
