Title: Experimental Hypersonics Research at Sandia: Facilities, Diagnostics, and Examples

ABSTRACT: Sandia National Laboratories has a long history of experimental testing in support of fundamental science and national security needs in the field of hypersonics. A brief overview of Sandia’s experimental facilities will be given, with emphasis on hypersonic facilities and how they complement each other to replicate the relevant phenomena. A selection of unique diagnostic methods used in hypersonic facilities will be shown. Finally, a deep dive is taken into an experimental campaign to measure image distortion, or aero-optics, through hypersonic turbulent boundary layers to illustrate how ground test capabilities can inform our understanding of hypersonic flows and provide data for modeling.

BIO: Kyle Lynch is a senior member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories within the Aerosciences Department. He specializes in the advancement and application of aerodynamic measurement technology in challenging aerodynamic environments and the design and construction of hypersonic ground test facilities where he serves as lead engineer of the Sandia Hypersonic Shock Tunnel. He received his B.S. and M.S. from Auburn University, and his PhD from TUDelft in 2015, all in the field of aerospace engineering.
