Graduate Research Assistant Positions in Agricultural Robotics

The Bio-inspired and Bio-mimetic Robotics Laboratory (Bio2Robotics Lab: https://sites.google.com/view/bio2robotics-lab) in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at New Mexico State University (NMSU) invites applications for multiple GRA positions starting January, 15th 2023 to work on agricultural robot projects. The position will be continued in the summer and fall semesters based on the GRA performance and availability of the fund. The graduate research assistant will be responsible for:

  1.  Developing computer programs and algorithms (in C++ or python) for the motion planning and operation of a mobile robot (Rover pro) and a robotic arm (manipulator) in the laboratory setting and on the farming field for agricultural applications including harvesting green chile peppers, crops and soil monitoring.
  2. Integrating the in-house developed fruit detection and localization algorithms into ROS packages for visual-servoing of the manipulator
  3. Design and prototype specialized gripper for chile pepper harvesting
  4. Testing, data collection, and analysis
  5. Writing reports, manuscripts, and present research results.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BSc or MSc in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or closely related fields
  • Extensive background and experience in ROS is a MUST
  • Proficiency in C/C++ or Python
  • Proficiency in MATLAB
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative and multidisciplinary team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with navigation hardware and Linux OS
  • Proficiency in programming and developing algorithms for real-time systems
  • Knowledge of linear and nonlinear control theories is a plus
