Title: Graphene and Related Materials: Processing and Applications

By Sakineh Chabi, PhD.

Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of New Mexico

ABSTRACT:  In the past decade, research in the field of two-dimensional (2D) materials has exponentially transitioned from fundamental studies to the development of complex 2D devices. 2D materials are only one or a few atoms thick, and graphene, the first 2D material discovered, is a single layer of carbon atoms. Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, which led to the Nobel Prize in Physics 2010, other 2D materials have also been synthesized successfully in the lab. Due to their reduced thickness, (less than 1 nm) and quantum confinement effects, 2D materials have an unusual set of structural, mechanical, electronics and optical properties which are very useful for many energy-related technologies.

In my presentation, I will discuss the processing and applications of two important 2D materials, graphene, and silicon carbide. I will describe how using a specifically designed structure of graphene can transform its unique structures and excellent properties to energy storage devices or add new functionalities to existing materials. When used as electrode materials for energy storage applications, graphene-based materials showed excellent electrochemical performance. Further, I will also talk briefly about our pioneer experimental research on two-dimensional silicon carbide.

BIO:  Dr. Sakineh Chabi is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM). She received her PhD degree in Materials Engineering from University of Exeter in England (2015). Before joining UNM, she was a postdoctoral researcher at Florida Tech (FL, 2015-2017), and Temple University (PA, 2017- 2018). Her research background includes graphene related two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials, energy storage devices, solar fuel, and fuel cells. Currently, her research team focuses on the growth of novel 2D semiconducting materials. Dr. Chabi has received several awards including Vebleo Fellowship, Women in STEM award, and STC innovation award. Dr. Chabi serves on the editorial board of Materials (carbon materials section).
