Title: Increasing the Industrialization of Metal Additive Manufacturing

ABSTRACT: In the last decade, additive manufacturing (AM) has moved far beyond its original prototyping applications to play an integral part in some companies’ product lines and production approaches. AM of metal components via powder bed fusion (PBF) has reached a maturity sufficient for serialized production of components that can achieve Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) certification. In spite of the ability of PBF to produce quality components, there are significant gaps in standardization and a general lack of understanding relating to process sensitivity. NASA has lead the way by providing extensive testing plans requiring witness coupons and sacrificial components that must be subjected to destructive testing to qualify the PBF process. This approach is costly and time consuming, the process prevents wider adoption of metal AM. New methods are being developed to understand the PBF process challenges and provide a path to rapid qualification.

BIO: Dr. Medina is a world-renowned expert in the area of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and electron beam powder bed fusion technology; also known as Electron Beam Melting (EBM). He has over eighteen years of experience in AM and has educated over one thousand scientists and engineers in the areas of meals AM technology, processes, and advanced applications. He has published and contributed to over 120 peer-reviewed journal and conference proceedings. Additionally, he has been awarded nine additive manufacturing patents, with several other patents pending. Throughout his career, his research interests has centered around additive manufacturing, with a heavy emphasis on the acceleration and advancement of the manufacturing readiness of metal AM technology.
