Required Skillset: Heat transfer (mainly conduction); measurement techniques; thermocouple effects; uncertainty propagation; data reduction; applied mathematics (ordinary and partial differential equations; integral equations; numerical analysis; ill-posed mathematics); and, strong interest and desire for discovery. This is basic research.
Topic: Advanced analysis and development of slug calorimeters for high-speed flow applications involving hypersonic ground testing. Development of alternative means for calibrating thin-film temperature sensors in milli-second time scales for shock (impulsive) facilities. The approaches are analytically challenging (modeling and analysis). It is hope to perform benchtop experiments in the future for experimental validation studies.
