Title: Current Research Efforts in Airframe-Propulsion Integration at AFRL/RQV

By Stuart I. Benton, Ph.D.

Research Aerospace Engineer, Air Force Research Laboratory/RQVI, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

ABSTRACT: This presentation gives an overview of certain in-house research activities within the area of airframe-propulsion integration at the Air Force Research Laboratory. An overview of projects focused on supersonic compression systems, a new direct-connect rig for subsonic diffusers, and computational efforts in predicting dynamic distortion is provided. A unique effort to recreate the geometry of a 1970’s fighter-like forebody/inlet wind tunnel model and compare CFD solutions to experimental data is discussed. This presentation also covers past work by the author on large-eddy simulation of airfoil dynamic stall.

BIO:  Dr. Stuart Benton is a Research Aerospace Engineer working in airframe-propulsion integration at the Air Force Research Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in 2015 from Ohio State University. Since 2010 he has been working in the fields of aerodynamics and flow control, studying applications in gas turbine engines, natural laminar flow airfoils, unsteady flows, and aircraft inlet systems. His work has encompassed various computational and experimental approaches to these aerodynamic systems.
